Textbook Donation

Community Impact and Tax Benefits

The Strategic Business Institute is a non-profit organization serving underprivileged and underserved children and young adults for the past 19 years. Its goal is to provide these students with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed, focusing on making textbooks available to those who cannot afford them. Our organization is seeking donations of new and unused books and selling donated books to generate financial support as well.

Donating books to qualified charitable organizations (organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code) such as Strategic Business Institute can provide both a sense of giving back to the community and tax benefits. In the United States, donations to qualified charitable organizations are tax-deductible, allowing individuals to claim a deduction on their tax return for the amount donated.

The fair market value of the donated books is the critical factor in determining the tax-deductible value of the donation. Fair market value is the price a willing buyer would pay a willing seller for the books, considering the condition and current market trends. One can also determine the fair market value based on the price the books would sell for in used bookstores or online marketplaces like Amazon or eBay. It’s important to note that the books must be in new or excellent condition to be eligible for a tax deduction, as the IRS requires donations to benefit the recipient organization.

Accurate records of the donation, including receipts from the charitable organization and a description of the books donated, are essential when claiming the donation as a tax deduction. A written acknowledgment from the recipient organization is required if the value of the donation is $250 or more. As a donor/business owner, you could deduct the total purchase value of the books, packaging, shipping costs, and other associated costs from your taxable income, based upon the number of books you donate.

The amount deductible from the donation is limited to 60% of the adjusted gross income for the tax year. Unused deductions can be carried forward for up to five years.
In conclusion, donating books to the Strategic Business Institute can positively impact the lives of underprivileged students and provide individuals with tax benefits. Consider donating your unused books and making a difference in the world.
